La obra más temprana de Carbonó se aleja del trabajo de sus contemporáneos. Definitivamente no era salsa ni tampoco cumbia. Más bien se trataba de un novedoso “guiso” genial y políglota de diversos estilos musicales con raíces africanas pero nunca antes combinados de esta forma. Afrobeat, soukous y highlife se mezclaban de forma natural con elementos de son cubano, toques de latin rock y funk, una pizca de calipso, algo de compas haitiano e incluso un poco de rock’n roll, por no hablar de la base de estilos locales costeños de Colombia como el vallenato o el porro.

Este LP de 1980 todavía suena único y moderno, como si Abelardo Carbonó y su conjunto fueran el eslabón perdido entre los sonidos panafricanos de los años 50 de Bovea y sus Vallenatos, liderados por la guitarra acústica, y los géneros más electrónicos y africanizados de los recientes champeta y terapia. Hasta se puede oír en la mezcla efectos psicodélicos de eco y slide guitar, lo que da una idea de lo inesperadas que resultan estas grabaciones.

This 1980 LP sounds totally different from its contemporaries and is still refreshingly unique and hip today, as if Abelardo Carbonó y su conjunto were the missing link between the pan-Caribbean acoustic guitar-led conjunto sounds of the 1950s and the more electronic, Africanized genres of champeta and terapia of recent years. You can even hear slide guitar and psychedelic echo effects in the mix, which brings the recordings to a whole other level of the unexpected.

Presented in its original artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.

Another golden compilation from AA! Great introduction to Afro-Colombian psychedelia via the Discos Machuca back catalogue. These songs are full of infectious percussion, trance-inducing rhythms, sun-soaked melodies, and hauntingly beautiful vocals.
