First ever reissue of “Tesura” (1970), the debut by Fruko y sus Tesos, which displays a diamond-in-the-rough simplicity born of the street, flaunting a macho swagger that is compelling in its focus and elemental integrity, heavily influenced by Willie Colón’s gangster posturing in New York.

From the severely separated audio channeling to the uncompromising rhythmic approach and ubiquitous sharp trumpet stabs in the style of Ricardo Ray and Ray Barretto, “Tesura” more than lives up to its title (slang for ‘toughness’). Fruko is right out front, his giant electric bass positioned in the center. The emphasis is on allowing the musicians to flex their muscles and strut their stuff, with many purely instrumental sections in a descarga (jam session) style echoing the freedoms being explored by the previously mentioned New York heavyweights Ray, Colón and Barretto, as well as Eddie Palmieri, Larry Harlow, Louie Ramírez and Johnny Pacheco.

Primera reedición de “Tesura” (1970), el debut de Fruko y sus Tesos, que posee la sencillez de un diamante en bruto nacido en la calle, con un aire chulesco que cautiva gracias a su integridad elemental, fuertemente influenciado por la pose gangster de Willie Colón en Nueva York.

Desde la notable separación de canales de audio hasta el vigoroso enfoque rítmico y los ubicuos golpes afilados de trompeta al estilo de Ricardo Ray y Ray Barretto, “Tesura” hace honor a su título (“dureza” en jerga). Fruko está en primer plano, su bajo eléctrico posicionado en el centro. Another golden compilation from AA! Great introduction to Afro-Colombian psychedelia via the Discos Machuca back catalogue.
